Proper Umbrella Care: How to Keep Your Brolly Looking Its Best

A quality umbrella is designed to handle plenty of unpredictable weather, but a little regular care can make a significant difference to its appearance, performance and lifespan.

From allowing the canopy to dry properly to removing everyday dirt before it builds up, these simple habits will help keep your umbrella clean, fresh and ready for the next forecast.

Always Allow Your Umbrella to Dry Completely

The most important rule of umbrella care is simple: never place a wet or damp umbrella back inside its protective cover.

After using your umbrella, open it fully and leave it in a well-ventilated area until the canopy, seams and frame are completely dry. Packing an umbrella away while moisture remains trapped between the folds can encourage unpleasant odours, mould and mildew. Prolonged moisture may also contribute to corrosion around metal components.

Whenever possible, allow your umbrella to dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid placing it directly against a heater or exposing it to excessive heat, which may affect the canopy fabric or other components.

Once completely dry, close the umbrella carefully, secure the fastening strap and return it to its cover.

Remove Loose Dirt and Dust Regularly

Dust, dirt and small particles can gradually settle into the canopy fabric and along its seams. Rather than waiting until the umbrella requires a deep clean, occasionally open it and gently brush away any loose debris.

Use a clean microfibre cloth, soft sponge or very soft-bristled brush. Avoid abrasive pads or stiff brushes, as aggressive scrubbing may damage the fabric or its water-resistant finish.

Pay particular attention to:

• The folds of the canopy
• Stitched seams
• The canopy tips
• The fastening strap
• The area around the umbrella’s centre

Removing surface dirt early helps prevent it from becoming embedded or leaving a lasting mark.

Clean the Canopy with Mild Detergent

For light dirt or small marks, prepare a gentle cleaning solution using lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent or soap.

Open the umbrella and use a soft, damp cloth to gently wipe the affected area. Work gradually and avoid soaking the fabric unnecessarily. Once the mark has been removed, wipe the area again with a separate cloth dampened with clean water to remove any remaining soap.

For more extensive cleaning, gently work across the canopy in small sections before rinsing away all detergent residue. Allow the umbrella to remain fully open until it has air-dried completely.

Avoid using:

• Bleach or harsh stain removers
• Strong household cleaning chemicals
• Abrasive powders or scouring pads
• High-pressure water cleaners
• Undiluted concentrated detergent

Strong chemicals may discolour the fabric or interfere with its protective finish. Always test any cleaning solution on a small, less visible section first.

Deal with Marks as Soon as Possible

Mud, food, drink, tree sap and bird droppings are generally easier to remove when treated promptly.

First, allow loose mud to dry and gently brush it away rather than rubbing wet soil deeper into the canopy. For remaining residue, use the mild-detergent method above.

Do not scrape stubborn marks with a sharp object, as this could puncture the canopy, damage its coating or pull the fabric fibres.

Wipe Down the Handle, Shaft and Frame

The canopy is not the only part of an umbrella that benefits from occasional cleaning.

Wipe the handle and exposed shaft with a soft cloth lightly dampened with clean water. A small amount of mild detergent can be used if necessary, but the surfaces should be wiped again with clean water and dried immediately afterwards.

While the umbrella is open, take a moment to inspect its ribs and joints for trapped dirt, visible damage or anything that may interfere with smooth movement. Regular inspections can help identify minor issues before they become more serious.

Avoid applying oils, sprays or lubricants unless they are specifically recommended for the umbrella, as excess product can transfer to the canopy and attract additional dirt.

Open and Close It Carefully

An umbrella should open and close smoothly without excessive force.

Before opening it, make sure the fastening strap has been fully released and the canopy is not caught or twisted. When closing it, follow the umbrella’s intended mechanism and allow the canopy to collapse naturally.

Never force an umbrella that appears stuck. Forcing the shaft, runner or ribs can damage the internal mechanism or place unnecessary pressure on the frame.

If something does not feel right, stop and check that no fabric, strap or foreign object has become caught.

Do Not Leave It Loose in Strong Wind

Even a wind-resistant umbrella should always be handled sensibly in severe conditions.

Avoid allowing the canopy to act like a sail. Hold the umbrella securely, remain aware of sudden gusts and close it when conditions become unsafe. Rain umbrellas can become difficult to control in gale-force winds, potentially placing both the umbrella and its user at risk.

Do not deliberately turn the canopy inside out or repeatedly test it against extreme wind. Wind-resistant construction is intended to provide additional protection during real-world use—not to make an umbrella indestructible.

Store It Neatly in a Dry Place

Once your umbrella is clean and completely dry, smooth the canopy panels into their natural folds before fastening the strap. Avoid twisting, crushing or tightly forcing the material into position.

Place the umbrella inside its protective cover and store it somewhere dry and sheltered. Try not to leave heavy objects resting on top of it, particularly across the ribs or shaft.

Long-term exposure to unnecessary heat, dampness or direct sunlight may affect the appearance and condition of the canopy. Clean, dry storage helps prevent fabric damage, odours and corrosion.
